Microsoft Office Specialist Certification Achieved

Congratulations to Isabella Dell Api for successfully completing her Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification.  As a result she was rewarded a $200 check from Mr. Padget (Monroe Compute$).  She also earned her teacher $50 and the DOE gives the classroom $800.00.  Congratulations to Bella! 
Congratulations Buisness Education Students

Congratulations to the students in Mrs. Vazquez’s  Business Education course who received their certificates and a $50.00 check from Monroe Compute$, for passing the IC3 Spark certification test.  IC3 Spark helps students develop digital literacy skills that are necessary to compete in today’s digital arena.  They are the first class/students in the district to earn this certification and recognition. 
SLS Tallent Show
Sugarloaf 2nd Annual Talent Show was a great success, thank you to everyone that attended and helped with the event. A special thank you to our Talented Sugarloaf Sharks!

Students that are required to attend Sugarloaf’s Summer Academic program will follow the following Calendar
Summer Academic Session:
  • Monday, June 12, 2017-Tuesday, July 11, 2017 (no school Tuesday July 4th)
  • Summer Academic Session: 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM
  • Breakfast and Lunch available

Kindergarten Round up 2017


Congratulations Cheer Team
“Bringing Home a 2nd Place Trophy”, Sugarloaf Middle School Competition Cheer Squad participated in the Ft.Lauderdale Cheersport Grand Championship on April 8th 2017 in the Junior 1 Recreational Division. The Cheerleaders would like to thank the community sponsors for their donations and support.

Student Recognized by Monroe Computes

Sugarloaf Middle School student, Steven Winemiller, was presented with a $500 check from Monroe Computes for completing his Microsoft Office Certification.  In addition to the cash award and industry certification, Steven also earned three college credits and additional funds for his classroom. GEM Recognitions

At the February 28th School Board Meeting in Marathon, Middle Keys students who excel in science were recognized and received a GEMS award. GEMS stands for Great Educational Moments for Monroe County Students We are proud of our SHARKS!!!

Ms. Theresa Bass was recently recognized with a GEMS award from the district for her efforts and hard work in growing the Unified Young Athlete’s program county wide and increasing the number of programs and participants by more than 100%. The program is a part of Monroe counties Special Olympics program.  We are proud of Ms. Bass's efforts to support and grow opportunities for all students.

Cyber Crimes Assembly

Sugarloaf Schools SRO Sargent Mixon brought members of the Sheriff’s department to our school to discuss internet safety and the the Do’s and Don’ts of posting and sharing information via the internet and cell phones. The entire Middle School was able to attend the assembly. Thank you Sargent Mixon and the MCSO for the informative assembly. 

A Reminder From our Clinic
Clinic Reminder for Parents:
ALL medications, including over the counter medications, are required to have a doctor’s prescription and must be signed in through the clinic by a parent or guardian.  Students are not permitted to carry any medications during school unless cleared through the clinic staff and principal.  Please call the clinic staff if you have any questions or concerns.  Thank you.

Author Rachel Vail Visits our Middle School

Middle School students attended an assembly with Rachel Vail, she is an author of many books that are geared to young teen readers. She talked with students about many topics relevant to teens today as well as her latest book Unfriended.  Her visit was in part due to a ​contest  that involved answering the question "why would it be a privilege to introduce the author?"  Students composed and TEXTED messages to their Language Arts Teacher Ms. Fairbrother-Smith  in a app called i"text-ESE" some of them even came
complete with emojis. The winner was 8th grader Sarah Centonze

Our Little Olympians

The Special Olympics Florida Young Athletes Program Culminating Event was held at Sugarloaf School on Friday, March 3rd.  Students from Ms.Bass and Ms Collier's classes along with Ms. Jones's Pre K class participated in the event. They were supported by some of our middle school students and Ms. Nelson. It was a great event and the Kids loved going through all the events to earn their ribbons and certificates.
Achieve3000 Contest Winners

The Achieve3000 reading program contest was a challenge for the entire school.  Students were working on the Social Studies news articles on their individual level, responding to multiple choice activities.  Ms.
McKnight's class  was the one with the highest average. Congratulations on a great Job!
Guest Reader

Ms. Ryan’s first grade class was treated to having Howard Livingston as their guest reader during Literacy Week at Sugarloaf School.

Congratulations to Janet Vazquez! She is the winner of the 2 Months of Contest!! Her students helped her earn a Chromebook, compliments of Since November 1, her students have launched curriculum 3,665 times! provides an "intuitive, flexible, and personalized digital education experience" for computer science students. 
Hour of Code at Sugarlaof School
Elementary students in Mrs. Vazquez’ computer science class participated in “The Hour of Code” initiative.  This initiative teaches students the basics of computer science and computer programing. Schools throughout the world participate in “The Hour of Code’ during the month of December.

Congratulations on a Fantastic Finish!

Shout out to two members of our Sugarlaof Shark Family. Our School Nurse Mrs. Lisa Graft and Middle School Teacher Ms. Pamela Smith took home first place honors in the Croom Zoom 100K!  (Yep, that’s 62 miles!)  They started the race together in driving rain and finished it together many hours later in freezing temperatures to become the ONLY female finishers.  Hard work and tenacity really does pay off!  We are very proud of them and this awesome accomplishment!

New and Beginning Teacher of the Year

Ms. Rachel Quad was selected as Sugarloaf School's 2016-2017 New and Beginning Teacher of the Year by her colleagues. Ms. Quad teaches Kindergarten. We are luck to have her as a member of our Staff and our Sugarloaf Family. Congratulations Ms. Quad. 
Lieutenant Test Recognized

     Principal Harry Russell of Sugarloaf School presented and award to the Lt. Glenn Test in recognition of his years of service to Sugarloaf School as our School Resource Officer for the past 4 years and his retirement from the Monroe County Sheriffs' department after almost 24 years of service.  Our Sugarloaf Family will miss Lt. Test but wish him much happiness in his retirement. 
     The School also recognized Sheriff Ramsay and Sgt. Mixon for their support of Safety day and their dedication to the community

Mr. Dallas is our Elementary music teacher and our Middle School Band and Choir teacher.
We are all proud to have him represent our school! 

2016-2017 Inclusion Teachers of the Year

Congratulations to our 2016-2017 Inclusion Teachers of the Year.   First grade teacher Mrs. Michelle Ryan is our Elementary Inclusion Teacher of the year and Mrs. Victoria Fairbrother-Smith who teaches Language Arts, is our Middle School Inclusion Teacher of the Year. We are extremely proud of these exceptional teachers and proud to have them both represent our school.

NASA Moon Rocks Come to Sugarloaf School

Mrs. Master's 5th grade Science classroom had a presentation on November 10th  about moon rocks, with actual moon rocks on hand for the kids to observe.  NASA has a program Mr. Mike Mongo and Mr. Rodney Richardson were  able to gain clearance to get the rocks and bring them to Sugarloaf School.  It is not everyday you get to see the moon from a few inches away.  Mr. Mark Porter our Superintendent was also present for the presentation.  Our students and teachers are thankful for this great opportunity.

Mrs. Vazquez's  Business Education Class students have started a PBIS store "SHARKY'S SUPPLIES" students can purchase supplies with the PBIS tickets they have earned! Great Idea Great Job Sharks!

Marianne Nelson named FCSS Teacher of the Year for Monroe County
Monroe County School District is pleased to announce the Florida Council for the Social Studies (FCSS) Teacher of the Year for Monroe County is Marianne Nelson from Sugarloaf School. Mrs. Nelson was selected because of her ability to foster the development of democratic beliefs and values, and the skills needed to for citizenship appropriate to her students, her student teacher relationships, her professionalism, and her outstanding teaching methods.   
     Mrs. Nelson teaches 6th grade World History and 8th grade U.S. History at Sugarloaf School. Mrs. Nelson, "utilizes many teaching strategies; such as, integrated technology, learning centers, and cooperative learning to help engage the many different learning styles of the students," as described by her principal, Mr. Harry Russell. Mrs. Nelson participated and led two Teaching American History grants, she has coordinated school trips to Fort Zachary Taylor to celebrate Civil War Days and a lecture series put on by the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum. She is a member of the National Council for the Social Studies, the National Council for History Education and Florida Council for the Social Studies. Mrs. Nelson is a leader, mentor, and an outstanding social studies educator.
